A Toast

This was the result of a ten-minute-fic challenge over on the Yahoo! group -- I posted it on Monday 30th January. I wrote it in under ten minutes. Just. And I've changed two words since then.

A Toast

"You have *got* to be kidding me!" Hawkeye opined
As he peered at the glass in his hand:
"I would bet that this alcohol makes you go blind,
And I'm sure that was not what you've planned."

But the man sitting opposite, hiding a smile,
Poured a glass of the nectar himself,
And he raised it to toast his own cunning and guile
with the words "to your very rude health".

I've been back through the archives here, and can't find this one. It's possible it only got sent to the Yahoo! group, so I'm putting it here too so that I can link to it. Don't know how long ago I wrote it.

Ought

You don't want to know how I feel about you: It ought to be kept to myself.
You've a wife back at home, and you ought to stay true, and I ought to stay on the shelf.
I lie here at night, and I thrill to your snores, and I counterpoint them with my curses;
I ought to resist what the army deplores. I think I'll just stick to the nurses.

Shakespeare's Scottish play, this scene
Charles Winchester/Maxwell

Is this a corporal I see before me?
His dress near my hand? Come, let me clutch thee.
I love thee not, an yet I need thee still.
Art though not, beauty indeed, fashionable
Too gorgeous for my eyes, or art thou but
A corporal of the mind, a false image,
Proceeding from the lust-crazed body?
I see thee yet, in form as beautiful
As any my eyes dost see.
Though rouses me under all conditions;
And I would bed you thoroughly anytime.
Mine eyes are captivated by thy form,
By thy grace I know thee, I see thee still,
And though my eyes are closed thy beauty,
Thy dark eyes astound me. There is no peace here:
Except within thy arms in which I lie
Close to my heart. Now under the covers
With thee in my arms, and wicked thoughts amuse
As thee do sleep; the heart celebrates
Turning wicked thoughts, and craven lust,
Into action here in my bed, the love,
Which warms my heart, with its gentle glow.
With Aphrodite’s ravishing strides, you captured me
Wholly by surprise. Thy lovely and firm buttocks,
Feel my soft touch, over your smooth skin, for love
Thy very body trembles under my every touch,
And take the very horror from this place,
Which eats at my soul. While I love, he lives:
Any thing you wish I shall do my best to give.

A chopper sounds
We go, and it is done, the chopper incites me.
Heed it now, Maxwell; for it is a knell
That summons us away from heaven into hell.

Exit.

Another friday 5mf

Sometimes I'll miss him, his curls, and his smile, and his hand on the back of my head.
Sometimes I'll kiss you, and know all the while that I'm kissing the new one instead.
Sometimes you'll thrill me and help me to deal, when I may never see him again.
Sometimes you'll kill me by making me feel that another man isn't the same.
Sometimes there's dreams that the nightmare will pass, that I'm back at my home on the bay.
Sometimes it seems that, with just one more glass, I can make all the pain go away.
Sometimes I'll go very close to the brink, and I'll fight like an unbroken colt.
Sometimes you'll know just to pour me a drink, and to tell me it isn't my fault.

[livejournal.com profile] loneraven has started issuing five-minute challenges on the [mash-slash] Y! group again.

This took more than five minutes, which -- from me -- is sort of traditional. It's a sonnet, which -- from me -- is sort of traditional as well. And they never quite manage to get it together, which -- from me -- is perhaps most traditional of all.
Pairing should be evident.

Like much of my writing, this takes its rise from events in my own life. You have to learn to leave the past behind, especially if it's crippling your participation in the present, or the future.

I don't think it's especially good -- there are some dodgy rhymes and there could be better resonances between the first eight lines and the last six. And I don't much like the 4+4+6 structure either, I'm more at home with 4+4+4+2.

Never mind. It took about twelve minutes.

With apologies to Henry. )
