A/N: This story is a little bit anachronistic. True, William Greatbatch invented the internal pacemaker in the late 1950s, but as the National Society of Professional Engineers named Greatbatch's invention one of the ten greatest engineering contributions to society of the last 50 years in 1985, it's unlikely that Hawkeye (who was the cardiac specialist in the 4077th) would not have heard of him by this point (1959/1960). It's also unlikely that this conference would have been going on so late, although who knows, maybe the cardiac specialists were an old crotchety bunch who were late to get on the technology boat, as old crotchety doctors tend to be. Let's just say that Hawkeye was living in a bubble and the conference was late due to technical difficulties. Greatbatch is still alive, by the way, (or was as of 1999) and working on fighting AIDS, playing the harmonica and building solar powered canoes. Next chapter will have more exciting pacemaker facts. Aren't you lucky.
