Stay Anyway
"Are you leaving?"
He paused, sitting up halfway, and shrugged. "I gotta. It’s almost light out."
"Well...can’t you stay? Y’know, for a little bit longer?"
Hawkeye shook his head, reaching for his boots. "I can’t. I’ve got to be getting back. Trapper’ll be asking questions about where I’ve been. He knows I didn’t have a date."
"Oh really? Well...all right, but you really can stay...if you want to."
The younger man glanced over his shoulder, favouring the older man with a Look. "I do want to, but I can’t."
"Stay anyway."
He shook his head again, sitting on the edge of the actual mattress, which was amazing to sleep on – not to mention the immense feeling of comfort that came from having someone to sleep next to, someone’s arms to curl up in. "I wish I could Henry, but I-"
Henry sat up too, moving behind Hawkeye and putting his hands on his shoulders. "Stay." he said softly. Hawkeye hesitated, and Henry used that to pull him back into the bed, fixing the blankets over both of them and putting both his arms around the younger doctor again. "I love you." he said.
Hawkeye sighed heavily, closing his eyes, too weary to resist the warmth of the embrace. "No you don’t." he said tiredly.
Henry didn’t argue, as it was what Pierce said every time the affection was voiced, but he kissed Hawkeye’s ear and held him, wishing it was true.
