[identity profile] siggen1.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] mash_slash
This started as a comment, but ended up taking a different direction. That first comment on X-rated that Murf dug up, and that was categorized as a flame, came from me.

Regarding what has been going on the past 24-36 hours here and in my journal: Wow... Just...wow...

I've never been flamed, and I didn't know that was what I did. Looking back, I would probably have deleted my comment upon re-reading the following morning, except the following morning (CET) the fic was gone, and random remarks around LJ indicated that there'd been drama over the night. Damn the timezones. I'd promised a friend of mine I'd write a little something on the essence of fanfic. It turned slightly more nasty than I intended for it to be. But still, I posted it. Then, a few hours later, I went to bed, and overnight, all hell broke loose here.

I trust Murf and I have made our peace...? I realise that I should've "taken you under my wings" personally, but here's the deal: I still in many ways consider myself a newbie in this fandom, and thereby unworthy, although I should probably wake up and smell the absence of all our BNFs. Also, I suck at betaing. So, sorry for that.
My comment did take out some excess frustration on someone who didn't deserve it, but the header of that story infuriated me, because I believe firmly that deliberately OOC fic isn't good fanfic. My frustration probably originates in the fact that people are running from this fandom faster than their legs can carry them, and that I saw one of the new writers here (or maybe more than one, I'm not sure) write something in a story which could be interpreted to the effect of "Canon my a**, BJ is just intials and mean something because I said so", and this has, to me, seemed to be an example of the attitude of many of the new writers here.

Am I being an elitist bitch? Maybe. If I am, then I'm sorry, and I'll shut up. I didn't mean to cause a wank. Not at all my intention. (I didn't even know that this is what's called a wank) I misjudged the intent with which the header of 'X-rated' was written. I interpreted it as a person deliberately throwing the virtue of good and accurate characterisation to the wind. I realise that it wasn't.

A couple of things to round things off:
-An anonymous commenter on the last post said this: "There's also the question of whether everything posted really is open to criticism. This community assumes that everything is." Er, hello? You want us to just blindly accept someone saying: "I want ONLY positive feedback, my story can't get any better, and if it can, I don't want to know!" Ain't gonna happen on my part, that's for sure. If someone says that feedback is welcome, I will tell the truth. If someone says they only want positive feedback, that's equal to saying they don't want feedback. Sorry.
-I agree with Sara, we've been spoiled, and hold ourselves and others to high standards. But I do want to point out that I have posted both pure encouragements and mixes of concrit and encouragement. I am usually NEVER as harsh as I was the other day. Most of us are slightly brusque in the way we act, though, and that takes some getting-used-to.
-[profile] siriusly_punk: My idea, personally, of fun regarding fanfic, is writing a fic, finishing it and just knowing I nailed the voices, and that I've written something that stands to my own and other people's standards. I did NOT give details on how to write good fanfic. I simply stated (in not quite so few words) that the important thing is to respect the original work. You do not respect the original work if you deliberately and with "malicious intent", so to speak, disregard the characterisation. If you think I'm a snob, then I'm sorry about that. That wasn't my intent.
