"Part One, Guilt" and "Part two, Betrayed"
I stole something today and I am incredibly glad that I did. For I stole something priceless that I will cherish forever.
Now, admittedly Trapper was already in the states when I stole Hawkeye away from him, but in a way this made it harder for me to do so. Mostly because Hawkeye never got to say goodbye and this caused him to cling to the memories of the two of them with a stubborn resiliency. He turned the blatant insult of Trapper’s not even leaving a note into, “he hated to leave so much, he just couldn’t say goodbye.” To him, the fact that McIntyre left without so much as a word or was proof of how much the man loved him.
He even blamed himself for not being there to say goodbye for the fact that Trapper never wrote after leaving. It took BJ’s friendship and my support for Hawkeye to forgive himself for not being there, but thankfully he was finally able to. But he was still in love with Trapper, at least until I stole his heart away. Which I’m glad I did for it is worth more to me than almost anything.
The only thing more precious to me is Hawkeye’s trust which came only with time. I had to prove myself trustworthy. Which I did by writing him often, by calling him when it was possible, by visiting as much as I could and by proving through that, that I would never leave without saying goodbye. That I would never leave without giving him a chance to say goodbye.
All of this allowed me to steal Hawkeye away from Trapper. All of this helped me to obtain his heart and earn his trust. I promise to always treasure having both.
