Title: One of these things first.

Pairing: Hawkeye/Trapper

Summary: This is how it should have gone.
AN: Need Trapper Icon. Offering this up because I’m always writing when I should be studying. Feedback is Love.

this is how it should have gone:

Hawkeye arrives back to a quiet, sombre camp; only the sound of a distant, despotic Frank Burns barking orders on uniform and uniformity. It’s just how it was when he left for R’n’R, broken and wasted at the bottom of the sea, a deeper, darker nothing than it was before. Hawkeye stumbles into the Swamp and falls into his cot and the smell hits him where it hurts, feels like he’s just falling, falling, falling,

“Hawk.” Trapper’s got a hand on his shoulder and is pulling him back out, giving him air to breathe and life to cling to. Hawkeye turns to his best friend, eyes stinging with unfallen tears and throat dry from the ‘no, no, no’ he has silently screamed. Trapper smiles, “Don’t worry, I’m still here.”

and this is how it could have gone:

Trapper’s all rough drawl and apple pie; easy, loose and swaying to the jukebox, shuffling over to Hawkeye who is this side of drunk and too far gone to fake it. Trapper sits, real cool, moves right in, one eye on Houlihan dancing with Burns, one possessive hand around Hawkeye’s knee. He says, ‘Ferret free Swamp, Hawk,’ and his breath is hot and misty, his breath is drawing patterns on Hawkeye’s neck, thick and sweet and oozing right down Hawkeye's spine. They only make it to the Supply Tent and they don’t last long but they make it through and make it good. They fall asleep with the name of the other on their lips and wake up with the tang of each other on their tongues.

but this is how it really went:

Trapper borrows good paper from Kellye and a pencil from Radar and sits to write out every stitch that Hawkeye Pierce has sewn. He seeks out words that have never been said, curves and lines and dotted I’s that have never been seen, felt, meant. He tries and tries and tries then stops, because with Hawkeye, it’s never been this hard. Hawkeye and Trapper, it just is, and it just will be, long after this, long after Korea. Trapper grabs Radar, kisses and squeezes tight, asks him to pass it on.

Hawkeye will just have to come home for the rest.

and this isn’t where it ends.
