Summary: Set to take place in the episode 'Sticky Wicket'. Hawkeye's feeling down about his patient, and Trapper makes several attempts at reassuring him that he'd be okay. Only one works.
Reassurance
Trapper, his arm around the reluctant Hawkeye’s shoulder, led him away from private Thompson and out the post-op door into the cool night air. He could tell his friend had a lot on his mind, understandably. Hawkeye cared a lot for his patients, not to mention what Frank had said to him in the mess tent – it was obviously straining him greatly, and Trapper was concerned. Neither of them said anything until they got to the Swamp, at which point they both sat down on Hawk’s cot.
“He’s gonna pull through, Hawk,” Trapper finally said, breaking the unnatural quiet between them. He offered his friend a reassuring smile.
Hawkeye sighed, putting his head in his hands. “Something. There’s something that I missed, but I… I just can’t figure out what it is.”
Trapper lie down completely on his cot. He didn’t want to admit to himself he was getting just a little annoyed with Hawkeye’s obsession with Thompson’s health, but, well… he was. “Don’t tie yourself up in a knot about it. You’ll figure it out eventually.”
“The kid doesn’t have an ‘eventually’, Trap,” the black-haired man said almost annoyed, before, “I need a shower or something.” He stood up.
“Hawk,” Trapper started, standing up as well and grabbing the other’s wrist, “you’re a great surgeon. It’s probably only a post-operative reaction. Don’t let Frank get you down, alright?”
Hawkeye was quiet for a few long moments. “Thanks, Trapper.” But he just stood, not moving or leaving for the shower like he’d been planning to. The two captains just stared at each other, the reason for this probably being that Trapper was still clutching Hawkeye’s right wrist in his left hand.
“…Trap?” Dr. Pierce asked quietly, moving his right arm just a little. Trapper’s gaze went to his hand and he let go, instead putting his hand reassuringly on Hawkeye’s shoulder and smiling weakly, giving the shoulder a squeeze. “He’s gonna be okay.”
Hawkeye matched his smile. “I hope so.” Gazing upon the other, he saw the genuine concern in MacIntyre’s eyes.
Trapper thought about many things: about how great a friend he was, what a lifesaver he’d been during something like this, this war… about how he wanted to ease Hawkeye’s mind even a little; this definitely was not good for him. The other had made an obsession of seeing the private back in health, such an obsession that he'd pushed away from his friends, gone without sleeping, and as such he'd gotten... angry. Trapper was pulled out of his thoughts when he suddenly leaned forward and the pair of lips met. It was brief, almost embarrassed, and Hawkeye looked upon the other captain in a mix of confusion and pleasure.
“Trapper, what…?”
Trapper looked away. Now you’ve done it, dummy, he thought to himself. He knew a feeble excuse like ‘I slipped’ or the like wouldn’t work, and he knew if he used it Hawkeye would just be able to see through it anyway… he sighed, about to apologize for what he’d done, all the while being unthankful for once that Frank was off in Hot Lips’ tent, since right then would have been an opportune time to barge in and give Trapper a reason not to say anything more about what had just happened. He was about to open his mouth when Pierce caught his chin in his fingers and kissed him back. When he pulled away, he was smiling a little. “Thank you,” he said truthfully and seriously, picking up his robe and putting it over his shoulder. As Trapper stayed rooted to the spot, even more confused, Hawkeye headed to the door.
“That was all the reassurance I needed.” And he was gone.
