Recommendations Week: Day 2 - Sad

From one theme to another - today's theme is sad. Suggest any stories that end with you reaching for a tissue - or at the very least, a lump in your throat.

Like yesterday, recommend between one and five stories. State the title, author, a link, and a brief description of why the story is worthy of posting. The only thing I suggest for this section, is to warn potential readers of potentially controversial events (eg. graphic violence, non-canon character death, etc)

Oh, and feel free to reply to previous posts. "The mortar, the merrier."

Let's start with this...

Okay, I'm not really sure how to classify this one, but it definitely has its sad elements. It's called "Offer Up Your Last Defense" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1119768/1/Offer_Up_Your_Last_Defense) and it's by the inestimable Meredith Bronwen Mallory. The reason to read it, in my opinion, is because she packs so much into so little, and she does it so well. In this fic are so many things--love, death, fear, hope--all of them stated both implicitly and explicitly. Add to that the author's amazing skill with imagery and detail, and you have one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read. (In fact, I personally am not sure that I would even define this as a mostly sad story, but I've been told by others that it is. So we're going to go with that.)

There are many, many warnings that this story probably needs; however, every single one of them will lessen the story's impact. So, if you want/need spoilers, I'd suggest you e-mail me off-list (at CartoonB@aol.com), where I'll give you whatever you'd like. :-)

(Also? I'm absolutely flabbergasted: when I just went to grab the URL for this fic, I discovered it was the author's first M*A*S*H fic ever. I'd forgotten that, because the fic is so phenomenal, you'd never guess it was by a "new" writer.)

Here's a pair of stories that stayed with me long after I read them. I went through a spurt of seeking out most anything set post-war because I was so interested in the characters that I wanted to see how they'd be in non-Korean settings. From all the fics I read with that in mind, this version has kind of become my personal canon. The characters are 10 years removed from the show, but they are very much so the same people. It's lovely and heartbreaking.

Title: Ten Years (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1702001/1/Ten_Years) and Hello and Goodbye (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1718390/1/Hello_and_Goodbye)
Author: TakenHawkeye
Rating: K for both (by ff.net standards)
Warnings: Major character death. But so worth it anyway.
