Well again, it's a lot of toe troding in a fandom that's as old as this one. I'm sure you'd get a similar reaction in a Star Trek com or a LotR com if you wrote something that was OOC and ignored canon.

And you know, the issue for some folks might not be issues of characterization and canon at all.
